About 'nfl football sch'-A Self Hating Black Person....
Since 1970, which I consider the "modern" era of football once the Super Bowl and league expansion started kicking in, there have been many surprises on draft day in the NFL. Some surprises were pleasant, others not so kind. Here are some of the surprises on the NFL Draft over the past thirty years. Walter Payton and Robert Brazile were drafted two picks apart in 1975. What is most surprising is that both these top 10 picks were from Jackson State, a small school in Jackson, Miss. While Payton went on to a Hall of Fame career with Da Bears, Brazile had a great career with the Houston Oilers earning seven Pro Bowl selections and earning the nickname "Dr. Doom" as a linebacker on defense who could rush the quarterback. Not a bad draft year for Jackson State which has done surprisingly well overall with other players such as Jackie Slater and Lem Barney, the other two Hall of Famers from Jackson. Lee Roy Selmon in 1976 was the first ever pick of the expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For all the hype around building a team around a quarterback or running back, Tampa Bay's first pick was a defensive end. After attending the University of Oklahoma he went on to be Tampa's first ever Hall of Famer and helped them to two NFC Central Division titles in 1979 and 1981 after Tampa's woeful first year of losing 26 games in a row before winning in December of 1977. Tom Cousineau was drafted in 1978 by the Buffalo Bills ahead of such greats as Kellen Winslow, Phil Simms, and even Joe Montana. As the overall number one pick of the franchise it was expected that this linebacker from Ohio State would do well in the NFL. Before he even heard a whistle in training camp he signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League after the Bills couldn't afford to pay his contract demands. Cousineau eventually made it to the NFL but for a number one overall pick to be shunned so badly it was a wonder he even came back to America. The position of placekicker is generally regarded as a position that gets drafted no earlier than the fifth or sixth rounds at most but some exceptions do come up. One of them was the 17th overall pick of the 2000 NFL Draft Sebastian Janikowski. The placekicker from Poland still plays with the Oakland Raiders and is one of the most accurate kickers currently in the game and last year had the NFL's longest field goal at 61 yards. For his career so far he's only missed three extra points and has a field goal percentage of 78.4 percent. None of these statistics are surprising except that in the modern era for a placekicker to be placed so high in the draft is amazing. Maybe not so when you consider Al Davis and how well the Raiders have done lately. One final surprise came also in 2000 as Courtney Brown and LaVar Arrington were picked one and two overall in the draft, both from Penn State. Courtney who? Arrington went on to be a force in the NFL but Brown endured seven years with surgeries and after Cleveland expanded into the league and needed a stalwart defense, Brown was doing fine until he retired after too many injuries. If only he'd played for Washington instead, maybe he would still be playing. What a difference one position makes. The official NFL website and Database Football are my sources for this article. |
