About 'cleveland browns at baltimore ravens'-Browns vs. Ravens: Live Game Grades and Analysis for Cleveland

The               old               Cleveland               Browns               became               the               Baltimore               Ravens               in               1996.

The               Ravens               first               ever               draft               pick,               offensive               tackle               Jonathan               Ogden,               will               be               enshrined               into               the               Pro               Football               Hall               of               Fame               in               2013.

A               great               offensive               lineman               from               the               franchises               Cleveland               days,               Dick               Schafrath,               should               join               him               there               some               day.
Like               Ogden,               Schafrath               was               a               high               draft               pick               by               the               Browns               as               he               was               taken               with               their               second               choice               in               1959               out               of               Ohio               State.

The               Browns               were               coached               by               Paul               Brown               at               the               time.

Brown               was               famous               for               taking               players               from               the               school               that               he               once               coached.

If               there               was               a               player               with               any               talent               at               Ohio               State,               Brown               knew               who               he               was.

Schafrath               was               a               talented               player               and               Brown               wasted               very               little               time               in               taking               him.
Schafrath               arrived               to               join               an               offensive               line               that               included               a               future               hall               of               fame               guard               in               Gene               Hickerson               of               Mississippi.

Together,               the               two               of               them               were               part               of               a               unit               that               opened               the               holes               for               the               man               that               many               feel               is               the               greatest               running               back               to               ever               play               the               game               in               fullback               Jim               Brown.

From               1959               to               his               retirement               in               1965,               Brown               rushed               for               over               1,000               yards               every               season               except               one               on               his               way               to               setting               a               since               broken               NFL               record               of               12,312               yards.

Much               of               that               yardage               came               behind               Hickerson               and               Schafrath.
Brown               was               not               the               only               hall               of               fame               runner               that               Schafrath               blocked               for.

When               he               first               got               to               Cleveland,               the               Browns               had               a               halfback               by               the               name               of               Bobby               Mitchell               who               teamed               with               Brown               to               terrorize               defenses.

Mitchell               was               traded               to               the               Washington               Redskins               in               1962.

When               Brown               retired               after               the               1965               season,               Leroy               Kelly               took               over               and               Schafrath               helped               him               to               become               a               1,000               yard               rusher               as               well.
From               1959               to               his               retirement               in               1971,               Schafrath's               blocking               helped               the               Browns               to               become               a               perennial               championship               contender.

In               1964,               they               won               the               NFL               championship               by               defeating               the               Baltimore               Colts               27-0.

The               next               season,               Cleveland               returned               to               the               championship               game               where               they               lost               to               the               Green               Bay               Packers               23-12.

The               1964               championship               is               the               last               that               any               professional               sports               team               has               won               in               Cleveland.

That               season               would               also               see               Schafrath               make               the               Pro               Bowl               squad               for               the               first               of               six               consecutive               years.
Schafrath               was               a               complete               offensive               lineman               as               he               played               both               guard               and               tackle.

He               was               good               at               straight               ahead               blocking               or               pulling               to               lead               a               ball               carrier               on               a               sweep.

Schafrath               played               left               tackle               and               was               the               man               who               protected               the               quarterback's               blind               side.

He               did               this               while               protecting               Frank               Ryan               during               the               championship               season               and               Bill               Nelson               in               the               playoff               seasons               from               1967               to               1969.

Schafrath's               job               was               made               tougher               when               Nelson               was               the               quarterback               in               that               the               signal               caller               played               on               two               bad               knees.
When               Schafrath               retired,               he               had               done               everything               that               an               offensive               lineman               can               do               and               at               a               high               level.

He               had               won               a               championship,               been               named               to               the               Pro               Bowl               multiple               times               and               helped               three               different               hall               of               fame               running               backs               achieve               greatness.

Not               too               many               offensive               linemen               can               say               that.
In               looking               back               over               his               career               Dick               Schafrath               can               be               very               proud               of               his               accomplishments.

They               are               worthy               enough               to               make               a               case               for               him               being               inducted               into               the               Pro               Football               Hall               of               Fame.
